APM Music has been hyping up crowds, driving highlight reels, building tension on teasers, and so much more since it began dabbling in the sports world around the late 90s. Major leagues and teams began to drink the Kool-Aid as sports media giant ESPN dove headfirst into APM’s production music catalog. It even went so far to license the iconic APM owned track “Heavy Action” to drive the entire evening.
Production music doesn’t typically get the spotlight that “Heavy Action” has. This makes Richard Deitsch’s article “The Music of an NFL Broadcast: How the songs you hear at ad breaks get picked” on The Athletic all the more welcome.
Deitsch gives an insightful peek behind the curtain by breaking down the music workflows of broadcast veterans Joanne Strange (ESPN) and Jim Rikhoff (CBS Sports). The NFL broadcasts go deeper than most think. Any music nerd who makes song references that usually don’t land will appreciate the musical-depth these folks have.
